Dodge City, KS Honored as Top True Western Town by True West Magazine!

Dodge City.  A name that bespeaks the Old West.  Wyatt Earp. Bat Masterson. “Gunsmoke.”  But it is more than the legends portrayed on the screen.   Dodge City is a place where the West still lives.

That is one reason Dodge City is #5 among True West Magazine’s 2021 Top Western Towns. They will be featured in the February/March 2021 issue, hitting newsstands on February 16, 2021.  Prescott, Arizona, took the top spot.

This year, the town will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail, the route from Missouri to New Mexico. The 1,200-mile trail splits west of Dodge City. Visitors can still see remnant wagon ruts of the trail nine miles west of town. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad depot is home to the Depot Theater Co., which stages dinner theater, murder mysteries and cabaret. Dodge City’s Boot Hill Museum has a collection of more than 60,000 artifacts from the town’s early history, including the “Guns That Won the West” exhibit. An expansion is adding the Mariah Gallery for traveling exhibits. The town’s biggest celebration is Dodge City Days, a 10-day festival featuring a parade, rodeo, chuckwagon breakfasts, and a cattle drive.

“Dodge City has such a colorful past,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell.  “Buffalo hunters, cattle drives, cowboys, gunslingers.   It’s a bit more tame than in its heyday, but visitors can still get a taste of what life was like back then.   There’s no question: Dodge City is a Top True Western Town.”

This is the 16th year True West has presented this annual award. Editors base their selection on criteria demonstrating how each town has preserved its history through old buildings, museums and other institutions, events, and promotions of historic resources.

True West magazine is in its 68th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation. For subscriptions and more information, visit TWMag.com or call 480-820-5545.
