The Vaqueros2019-08-01T14:00:00When Spanish settlers arrived in New Spain – later Mexico and the American Southwest – they brought with them the tradition of the Vaquero, a horse-mounted livestock herder that originated on the Iberian Peninsula of Europe. As American settlers moved west, they adopted the methods of the Vaqueros for managing large herds of cattle. In the 1870s, demand for beef grew and the cattle industry boomed. Massive cattle drives to railheads in towns like Garden City, Dodge City, and Abilene required the unique skills of Hispanic, Black, American Indian, and white cowboys of the Vaquero tradition. This presentation highlights the culture of the Vaquero, including the development of the corrido, a form of ballad popular among cowboys. Presented by Gene Chávez. Gene consults on diversity issues as president of Chávez and Associates.

"Law and Order: C-Rhyme and Pun-ishment"2019-08-01T19:30:00The Depot Theater youth take the stage in this musical spoof of the long-running tv show! In the nursery rhyme justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups — the detectives, who investigate the crime, and the magistrates, who prosecute the defenders. These are their rhymes. The Inspector and the Punnish Sir (Yes, he’s always scrambling for egg puns!) have been called in to investigate a crime scene where a Mister Humpty Dumpty has been found shattered and fowl play is suspected. Can they solve the c-rhyme? With hilarious musical numbers like “Mountain of Love,” “Eggicide,” and “What the HONK Is Going On?,” the yolk’s on you if you think this tongue-in-cheek musical is for young children. There are so many puns and plot twists in this Law and Order spoof, even the playwrights were surprised by the ending! Tickets are $5/$10/$15. Reservations recommended (620) 225-1001.
